Today, LED lights have become one of the most popular types of lights for growing. One of the biggest reasons for this is because of the myriad of advancements that have taken place in two fields; Both the field of growing (plants), and LEDs, have transformed over the years.

Due to this rapid growth and these transformations, the market has become significantly bigger. With this larger market, there is now a wide variety of LEDs that are designed for growing. So many different options are available, and as always, this can be a bit overwhelming especially if you aren’t entirely sure what you need to look for.

If that describes you and your situation, then this is the right buying guide. Whether you want to purchase a new, special LED grow light system, or you’re just curious, you’ll learn all that you need to know right here.

But, more importantly, less light can simply stop the growth altogether. You need a certain amount of light intensity that is just right for the successful growth and sustenance of your plants. But, you also need the right light intensity for your space, as well.

To figure out the intensity of the light, there are two things that you should do. The first thing that you should do is look at what the manufacturer has said, with regards to the coverage area. The second thing to look at is the PPF reading.

Now, the phrase “PPF” stands for “Photosynthetic Photon Flux.” This particular measurement details the exact output of light that LED produces. This output is measured in umol/s.

It is also a necessity to know the intensity of light that the plants themselves require, before doing any research or purchases.

Much of this can be found just by knowing the ideal spectrum that your plants require. This requires research, but it is truly valuable research that must be done. If it isn’t, you may end up wasting a lot of time and money with the wrong system.

However, there are two types of spectrums that you can find. They are “broad, white light” and “targeted”.

Broad, white light spectrums are more popular and, generally speaking, considered a lot better. This is due to the power of white diodes.

However, targeted spectrums are considered more efficient, on a photosynthetic level.

Ultimately, the best way to find the ideal spectrum is by researching the plants you are growing and reading about people’s experiences with the different spectrums.

This has to do with something known as “wattage draw”. Here’s the thing, though, while a LED system may say that it uses 600W, or something along those lines, that doesn’t mean the output is that exact wattage. Chances are, it’s usually not. Usually, it’s less.

This is because wattage doesn’t translate to light output. Instead, try to focus less on the overall wattage – although, naturally, for power reasons, you will need to keep it in mind – and instead focus more on the coverage area and the PPF, as mentioned earlier.

Generally speaking, though, there are a couple of basic rules to keep in mind. If you’re growing flowers, it’s ideal to have thirty-two watts per square-foot. This measurement works for most growing, in general. But, always make sure to do your research, because every plant has its own requirements and necessities.

This is the last question you need to ask. It ties in with affordability, as well. See, if you spend a lot of money on an LED system, and it ends up breaking, that really isn’t any fun at all. Especially if you don’t have any kind of warranty. Then, it becomes a problem.

Make sure to read the warranties for each LED grow light system you are considering purchasing. It is ideal that the system you purchase has a warranty that is at least three years. Five years is more ideal.
